Pastizzi Cafe King Street Newtown
Saturday morning we try a little piece of Gozo in SoKi. Just like Malta, pastizzis are small and beautiful.
You can only get two types of pastizzis in Malta - cheese or pea. The Pastizzi Cafe has more flavours than Gelatissimo, a few dessert ones would even make excellent gelato. Originally on Crown St in the city, this cafe by the same original owners serves fresh and frozen pastizzis, ravioli and pasta. Each of the pastizzis are only $1.80, so it's hard to choose just a few. We vote for the pea, a bite of smooshy green goodness inside like thick pea soup, and because it's close to breakfast, a bacon and egg one.
Pastizzis are little flaky puff pastry heaven, closely related to the empanada (although they only see each other at Christmas). In Malta they are sold at little bakeries all over the islands and are a great snack. When I was there pre Euro they were about 25c each.
The coffee is good too, washes away the flakes. You can sit and watch the slow crawl awake on South King St (SoKi in New York hipster lingo, or perhaps desperate real estate speak) and might even get to pat a passing dog or five.
Pastizzi Cafe is at 523 King Street, Newtown, right on the corner near Alice St. It has been known to have special Sunday food nights featuring that other great Maltese specialty, rabbit. I hope they serve it with spaghetti and chips in true M'dina style.
