Special International Supermarkets of Mystery Edition ~ Deyi Green Double Cooked Pork Slices Instant Rice Meal
It's gourmet Evel Knievel time again. This time we try a mysterious Chinese instant long life meat product. And live to tell the tale...
I see this little beauty on special in an Asian supermarket, the wonderful Thai Kee IGA on the bottom floor of Market City, above Paddy's Markets in Chinatown. Miss Chicken rolls her eyes as I jump up and down (mentally) with excitement. There's something about long life meat that intrigues me.
Like the theory of flight, long life meat is obviously scientifically possible. But I don't understand it. It's beyond me. I just have to have faith. I have faith that aeroplanes can stay up in the air, therefore, I have faith that my long life pork lunch will stay down.
Underneath the bonnet...
Step 1 - stick in boiling water and wait eight minutes. Eight long, long minutes.
Step 2 - open package of mystery meat and put it in the little side thing. No signs of lead or asbestos.
Step 3 - put hot water with soup mix.
Step 4 - Eat. And Pray. I wouldn't go so far as to call it delicious but it was edible. The 'meat' had a strong pickle flavour that did an admirable job of masking that unique flavour that is long life pork. It's almost as good as Chinese tinned pork ribs, but that's another story.
Can you believe I was actually confused by the instructions?
