Singapura Eating House ~ Singaporean - Oxford\Riley Street Darlinghurst

Singapura Eating House in Darlinghurst does good, basic Singaporean lunch fare, and quite a popular Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Singapura Eating House is the very definition of a hole in the wall joint. It is tucked away in that little dogleg arcade\shopping centre on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, on the corner of Riley Street.  While Singapura Eating House is basic, it's a nice little escape from the shenanigans of Oxford Street. And it has to be one of the cleanest hole-in-the-wall joints we have ever seen, it's not just spotless, it shines. Not that we care about such things (our motto: dodgyness is next to godliness), just an observation.  Over a couple of visits we noticed this place has a lot of regulars who are very fond of the owners. It's worth it alone to come and share some air with the colourful Darlinghurst locals.

Singapura Eating House is a great option if you find yourself hungry in Oxford Street, though perhaps not worth a special trip across town for, unless you are like us and have to try everywhere. The food is good lunch fare, but not amazing, though the Hainanese Chicken Rice is one of the better I have had in town... And come to think of it I must come back to try the Nasi Lemak and the lunchtime special of three choices on rice looks worth a shot...

Over a couple of visits we noticed that the Hainanese Chicken Rice ($9) is very popular here. It's quite good too, not my favourite in Sydney, but very good. The chook is moist with a savoury flavour, and the rice is flavoured well.

Mmmm, juicy chicken... It seems popular with local gym junkies - poached protein and rice can't be too bad for you. Can it?

Fried Hokkein Prawn Mee - $9. Fried hokkein noodles in a prawny gravy with prawns, squid, pork and bean sprouts. $9. The gravy wasn't the fresh uber prawny sauce I was looking for, not a 'wow' dish but certainly enjoyable..

Chicken & Mushroom Noodles - Hokkein noodles with chicken,  Chinese mushrooms and veggies with a plain, soupy gravy. $9.  I could imagine craving this after a weekend on the turps.

Fried Kway Teow $9. Fried flat noodles with prawns, squid, Chinese sausage and bean sprouts. It has a nice smokey soy flavour, not the best in town but very tasty. There seemed to be more bean sprouts than noodles.

Singapura Eating House is at Shop 10, Oxford Square, corner Riley and Oxford Streets, Darlinghurst.

I'm sure I used to get off the bus here many years (ahem, decades) ago when I would catch the bus from Canberra for a weekend of debauchery, before sleeping it off again during the week in the public service (sorry taxpayers). BTW you have to check out the little Japanese bento place in the same arcade - it's just like Japan. We'll get around to that one later.

  1. Wow I didn't realize this was there! It was just next to the apartment I stayed in for the past 5 months! If I rent the same apartment again I will definitely give this a try. Great job guys! Currently just eating my fills of hawker fare while I am home

  2. I live up the road and occasionally pop in for the kway teow and Hainanese chicken. Makes a nice change for a local cheap and cheerful and the guys there are lovely.

(Just discovered your blog and absolutely love it! Pouring over the archives now...).
