Indonesian Soft Bone Chicken at ATL Maranatha - Kensington [CLOSED]

Indonesian fried soft bone chicken and other mysteries explained at ATL Maranatha, Kensington.

[CLOSED - 2013]

ATL Maranatha is a tiny no-frills Indonesian joint in suburban Kensington. It sure seems popular, even on a Monday night there's plenty of punters, both dine-in and take-away.  The 'ATL' in the name 'ATL Maranatha' stands for 'Ayam Goreng Tulang Lunak' - fried soft bone chicken.

Service at ATL Maranatha is DIY - write down your order on the supplied pad and take it to the counter, help yourself to tea and drinks. It's all a bit of fun.

Ayam Goreng Tulang Lunak - Fried Soft Bone Chicken - $8 for one quarter. One bite tells us the chook has obviously been cooked for hours, until the fibres in the flesh break down and the bones become so soft you can eat them. It's quite a novelty chowing down on a leg bone. The battered skin is brittle and crunchy, and there's lots of it. This is hardcore fried chook, we think Colonel Sanders is going to have to get a day job.

Bebek bakar manis - $10. Grilled duck with kecap manis, sweet Indonesian soy sauce - $10. Also available with mild chilli sauce. There's plenty of rich duck flesh for your dollar, underneath a crunchy coating smothered in kecap manis. This is sensational.

Sambel Mangga - green mango in chili sauce - $5. The freshness of the mango and the sweet, tart sambal perfectly cuts the oil from the fried chicken and the richness of the duck.

Tempe Goreng - fried Indonesian fermented soy - $4.50. The dipping sauce has sneaky kick.

  1. I've never eaten soft bone chicken before, but it sounds okay as long as the texture isn't too weird. The fact it's deep-fried hepls. :)
