Pho Toan Thang ~ Vietnamese \ Chinese - Homebush West

Sydney restaurants where people love to queue #53:  Pho Toan Thang in West Homebush \ Flemington.

Homebush West has become a favourite lunch spot when we find ourselves hungry in the South-West. It's a small bunch of shops with a handful of great hole-in-the-wall restaurants. It's easy to find a park (or get the train) and you can justify your lavish lunch by getting some super cheap veggies at Flemington Markets across the road.

The most popular joint here seems to be Pho Toan Thang. We arrive for Sunday lunch and the queue is a doosy as always, but we try the old 'Far Queue Two' trick. Shawn gives the boss lady the V sign indicating we're a party of two, and we're ushered straight in, ahead of the other folks who are in groups of four or more and harder to squeeze in. We get some dirty looks, or at least we imagine we do. We give apologetic smiles in return. Far Queue Two.

The menu is a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese standards.

Bunh thit nuong - $8.50. The Vietnamese classic of grilled pork on cool rice noodles. The pork is extra tasty here.

Rare beef pho - $8.50. The broth has a little more oomph that some other places, tasting of more beef, less sweet. Thumbs up.

Pho Toan Thang is at Shop 9, 90-95 The Crescent, Flemington. Phone 9674 3687.

  1. I've forgotten the exact name of the dish, but there's a "combination (seafood+chicken+beef+pork)with vegetables on rice" number that's quite good here, too. :)

  2. Haven't tried this place yet, but the roast meat place next door is the dog's bollocks! Freaking awesome roast duck, pork and char siew.

    1. That place does look great. If we can drag ourselves away from the Sri Lankan and Malay places as well, we will get there I'm sure!

    1. I was most impressed with Shawn's queue jumping here. We often get a squeezed in spot when there's only two.

  6. This place is still going strong six and a half years later. (As is Mr Happy Chef next door.) Not a thing has changed except for the prices - maybe a $3-4 price rise across the board.
