Aslan Cafe ~ Strayan & Indonesian

A little birdie in St Peters told us their local cafe has an Indonesian dish or two on the menu.

We have to check it out. We love it when cafe owners put a little bit of their heritage on the menu, especially when it's Indonesian, for some reason. It's smart business too.

So we brunch in the inner west. On a Saturday. It sniffs of normal.

Aslan's menu has both regular cafe stuff as well an Indo dish or two.

Beef rendang is a dish we love in all it's forms, this one rich and wet, mild to medium on spice, tender of course, served with some gently flavoured  rice and rice crackers. The rice crackers had a slight touch of fish to them making a perfect partner to the beefy rendang sauce.

The Tempeh burger is a beaut - toothsome tempeh chunks in slaw, pretty good indeedy. We are still hoping to find a tempeh sambo like we had in the Javanese city of Malang, which is famous for it tempeh, domestic tourists pack their cars with boxes of the stuff.  The sambo was simply a perfectly cooked piece of tempeh, pan fried to a gentle outer crisp in between fresh white bread, the joy and texture was like that of an English bacon butty. One day sambo, we will meet again, one day.

Aslan Cafe is at 1 Council St, St Peters. www.aslancoffee.com.au
