The Peach Chinese Noodle Bar ~ Mascot

We're over the moon to see restaurants reopen after lockdown, though we're still a bit coronanoid thus sticking to restos we can sit outside, like The Peach Noodle Bar in Mascot.

The Peach Noodle Bar has been our favourite of late. Not only does it have a great menu, super nice boss lady and killer noodle soups, when you sit outside you can get quite a few sneaky pats from dogs passing by with their humans. We've come to like hanging out here so much we think of Peach Noodle Bar as The Peach Pit. Alison being Shannon Doherty, Shawn being Tori Spelling.

Bourke Street Mascot is not the most salubrious spot for dining al fresco, but the street is pretty low on traffic right now with the airport being pretty much closed.

Spicy trotters rice noodle soup - $16.80. A fairly fiery broth with plenty of dried chili and Sichuan pepper. The fixins bring it home - some chunks of lovely fatty pork, mushrooms, tofu skins, quail eggs, and a surprise hit ingredient - lettuce - which adds a nice fresh hit.

Spicy bullfrog rice noodle soup - $25.80. The same broth and fixins as the trotter soup above, only this time with frog instead of pig. Yes, the frog tastes like chicken, it's deep fried on the bone so it's delicious and fiddly. The surprise 'wow' came from the smaller froggy bits that just seemed be a bit of fat or skin and bone, whatever they may be they were little fat bombs that  soaked up broth and melted in the mouth. Oh boy.

Roast duck rice bento - $18.80. Duck and greens on rice with some lovely surprise fried lardy bits and runny yolk fried egg on the side. Awesome.

Toast with mashed taro, cheese and mochi - $7.80. The cheese gives a salty counter punch to the sweet mochi and taro, which is almost like jam. OMG and WTF in every bite.

We notice there's a few styles of broth. We must try them all. Today it's tomato broth - beef rice noodle in tomato soup - $15.80. Super thin flavour-soaking beef strips in tomato soup with enoki mushrooms, tofu skins, lettuce and quail eggs. This seems to be their standard mix of fixins and we love it - a lovely mix of flavour and texture. Slurping up the rest of the tomato broth and rice noodles as we reach the bottom of the bowl the flavour reminds us of Heinz tinned spaghetti, in a good way.

Mushroom rice noodle soup - $14.80.  The usual fixings with more mushrooms and mushroom broth, which the boss lady tells us is boosted with chicken frames and pork. Oh my giddy aunt.

We still have a couple of more broths to try - soy sauce and soy milk, we'll get around to them shortly.

The Peach Chinese Noodle Bar is at 6 Bourke Street, Mascot.
