The top end of Illawarra Rd used to be a lot less busy than it is now. The old fruit shops are slowly closing, new apartments are getting built. All change. We feel like we've been banging on about these areas changing a lot lately, but it seems to be increasing not flatlining.
One constant along the strip is The Yeeros Shop, opened in 1976 when the Jets were still in the main league and 'Play That Funky Music' played at the Marrickville RSL disco down the road.
The meat is especially tender, with small crispy bits getting sealed on from the twice cooking of the meat. You can buy it piled on top of chips, or by the kilo to take home and eat in front of the telly, perhaps watching a rerun of Countdown in your underpants.
We got nostalgia jollies on the chips, old school fish'n'chip shop chips perfect in their imperfections, especially the little crispy brown bits, and the odd eye.
The Yeeros Shop is at 431 Illawarra Road, Marrickville. Wear your flares.
They did recently upgrade the facade of the shop. Been served by the same family for as long as i can remember!
