Indo Cafe @ Kingsford ~ Indonesian [CLOSED]

There were tears when we discovered our beloved Kaki Lima Cafe was no more. But we bit our quivering bottom lips and tried it's replacement, Indo Cafe @ Kingsford, then it was all smiles again.

[CLOSED - 2012]

Indo Cafe is tiny with just a few small tables and just a few items on the menu. As far as we can tell it's Chinese Indonesian, which is a bit of a favourite sub-genre of ours. While this joint is pretty new we were lucky to get a table, it has it's fans already. We start off with a sweet Tehbotol ice tea popper.

We go for the special of ayam panggang (spicy grilled chicken) with chili (or peanut sauce), with rice and hot and sour tamarind soup - $7.50. The chicken is eye-poppingly good, lovely fresh spice flavours, the odd little note of coconut, it takes us back to Indonesia. The chili sauce has a fair wallop and nice tomato-ish flavours. The clear soup has a sweet tang and is a nice counter to the chili, it has a small piece of sweet corn and some radish. Very, very happy.

Bakmi ayam with bakso - $9.50. Alison's favourite Indo dish of chicken noodles with a bowl of soup, wantons and bakso (meat balls) on the side. Our tastebuds and Google tells us that the noodles are mixed with a little fat to give them that splendorous magical touch, we assume chicken or pork fat, or Blue Band (long-life margerine popular in Indonesia). According to Squidoo 'bakmi' means 'meat noodle' and is Chinese in origin.  Apologies if you know all this already, we're just learning aloud.

We forgot the Indonesian name for this but it is fried banana with condensed milk and grated cheese, finished with chocolate sprinkles. It may sound weird but fried banana and cheese is a combo that works surprisingly well, we first tried it in Java a few years ago. Yum!

We really enjoyed our feed at Indo Cafe, we'll be back. NB, it's not halal as far as we can tell.

Indo Cafe @ Kingsford is at is at Shop 3, 343 Anzac Parade Kingsford NSW, where Kaki Lima Cafe once was.

  1. Fried Banana and cheese? Bizarre. Absolutely bizarre. Everything in my brain says don't eat that Jasmin. Don't! I'll be passing on the recommendation to my Dad. He loves Indonesian food and hasn't found much in Sydney that he likes.

I like to have grilled chicken and sate for big protein no carbs lunch - this will be my spot for this now. On return had 3 choices on rice for $8.90. 1. So glad you had some good food. We walked past on Sunday and had to tear ourselves away to try something else. The food is indeed delicious and the price is right. We hope they stay around.
