Five Dock is one of those cross through suburbs, somewhere you never really think of as a destination to eat at. We've found some gems here, from Dosa Hub to the excellent Caminiti Butchery. Now we are back for the pork rolls.
This mural at the back of the local library gives you an idea of the housing mix, old terraces and new apartments being built. It's a slowly changing suburb.
The pork rolls though, are smack bang on traditional. Nam Viet Hot Bread makes a fine roll for five bucks, a not too carrot shred heavy mix with a nice touch of red onion in the salad. Simple serves of cha lua (meat) and a good pate.
One of the things we love most about this bakery is the font on the original signs, they're getting harder to spot as they get replaced. They knock out some old style cakes and bacon and cheese rolls as well.
Nam Viet Hot Bread is at 113 Great North Road, Five Dock.
Right where you get off the bus from the city is Bakersville Hot Bread. You can step right off the bus and walk straight into the bakery. The two ladies in here always seem to be having a private joke about something, they're a friendly lot. The roll is great too, white onion in here and nicely balanced pickles and carrot. Same good meat and pate, same roll price ($5.00).
Bakersville Hot Bread is at 137 Great North Road, Five Dock.
Look out for the view over the new Westconnex as the bus goes over the roadway wasteland near Haberfield. Oh Sydney, what have you done.
