Island Dreams Cafe ~ Christmas & Cocos Islands - Lakemba

Christmas Island is closer to Indonesia than Australia, but Lakemba is conveniently closer to us. The food at Island Dreams Cafe has a transporting sambal hit, the Malaysian influence in the dishes will get you there faster than a scuttling red crab.

The interior of Island Dreams Cafe is just how we like it, a little bit old fashioned and a whole lot unfussy. Shawn calculates that last time he ate at Island Dreams was at their old store in the city about 20 years ago, and this location has been around about as long. Up above the serving counter are pictures of made to order dishes, while in the front is a bain-marie-of-love for nasi campur. Near the doorway is a sweets counter with some great baked treats and fruit shakes.

Right next to the cash register are brown paper wrapped nasi lemak packets that jolt us right back to breakfast stalls in Kuala Lumpur.

We decide to go for the nasi campur - three choices on rice from the bainmarie-of-love for $11. Chili sambal eggs, beef rendang and fried potato and red capsicum.

Another plate, another mix - curried jackfruit, chicken giblets and chilli chicken in all glorious shades of red flecked brown.

Island Dreams Cafe is at 47 Haldon Street, Lakemba. Phone 0438 475 447 or see them on Friendface. Visit their sister store in Centennial Plaza in Surry Hills, Simply Fusion.

  1. Just a few metres from this place, you can also find a relatively new Padang-food restaurant https://dapur-ibu-alya-restaurant.business.site/ which may interest you.

Thanks for your comment joy - please keep your musings happy - if you want to complain about a restaurant please do it on a restaurant review site (or your own blog) - we're all about celebrating cultural diversity and the great eats that come along with it :-)
