We take an accidental left at Alberqueque\Waterloo and find a whole new bunch of restaurants to explore.
Underneath yet another new development in Waterloo is a string of Turkish, Chinese, Thai and Korean restaurants and a small grocery store centered around a small plaza. It's next to that whopping big Toyota dealership, which once upon-a-time looked alone and lonely on the corner.
We pick Granny's Noodle having liked their Burwood store so much. Granny's website says the food is Jiangnan Style, the menu also reminds us of Taiwanese food, particularly the beef noodle soup and braised chicken legs. Whatever the origins, we love having Granny's Noodle within walking distance of our inner west bubble.
Granny's signature beef & tripe soup noodles - $15.80 - with chili. A corker of a soup - slow cooked super tender beef bits in a dark broth. We tasted soy and five spice in the soup, wazzed up with optional chili - recommended.
Granny's signature beef & tripe soup noodles - $15.80 - no chili. We just had to make a trip to try the no-spicy version just to compare. The no-spicy version is excellent but the spicy version is the winner, the chili adds a base note and brings everything together.
Granny's tripe stir noodles with signature sauce - $12.80. The dry version is excellent too, there's more subtleties and oomf in the meat'n'spice flavours - also recommended.
Grilled chicken leg soup noodles - $13.80 + $3.20 combo upgrade for tofu + egg. We have a soft spot for braised chicken legs, though the five-spicey soup overpowers them a bit, next time we'll try the chook legs as a soupless side dish ($6.80). We upgrade to the tofu'n'egg combo for $3.20 - well worth it. The egg and tofu are marinated sorta oden style in five spice or something. For seventeen bucks it's quite a protein fest.
Granny's Noodle is at Shop 11, 5 Potter Street, Waterloo. Phone 8541 4954. See menu on the information superhighway - http://www.grannysnoodle.com/waterloo-menu/.
