Dumpling King Review ~ North Chinese - King Street Newtown

Now we don’t have to go to Chinatown to find good Northern Chinese food, Dumpling King on King Street Newtown gets our thumbs up…

Some of the cheapest and most delicious street food around town is North Chinese: simple, cleansing, filling, peasant food. We love it.

So we had tears of joy when Dumpling King opened in our neck of the woods a year or so ago bringing North Chinese to King Street, Newtown. It's just a little flasher than your usual North Chinese hole in the wall joint, but pleasantly so. The food has just a little extra garnish and it works.

Dumpling King do some of the best handmade noodles in town: thick and chewy, divine. We dig the soup with handmade dumplings, handmade noodles and a cleansing, simple broth. So simple yet so satisfying.

And they do a great rendition of my favourite, 'Chinese spaghetti' - boiled handmade noodles with pork mince. Dumpling King improves the classic by adding some crushed peanuts and garnish. Make sure to ask for dumpling vinegar, it completes the dish.

The menu also has all the old Cantonese favourites such as sweet and sour pork but we recommend ignoring that stuff and ordering from the dumpling section of the menu: it's delicious and it's cheap, the dishes (badly) photographed above were about $8.80 each...

  1. Peanuts on chinese spaghetti! Sacrilege. Still, I'll try it (they'd better not have made any "improvements" with the dumplings...)
