Fajar Indonesian Chinese Restaurant ~ Kingsford

It's several years since our last visit to Fajar Chinese Indonesian Restaurant in Kingsford and it's even better than we remembered.

We remember loving Fajar for the lovely old school ambiance of the interior. This style of classic 'Formica table' type restaurant is all but extinct in Sydney these days.

Fajar seems to be in an old fish and chip shop or milk bar, the stainless steel counters and huge exhaust fan look like they saw a hamburger or two flipped or some fish deep fried. Our other great love of Fajar are the women who work there, one was writing down orders with her arm in a sling while we were served by the most topsest of aunties who must have been pushing ninety and still smiling under her beanie.

However we forgot how good these folks can cook. Alison ranked the nasi goreng as a personal 'best ever'. Forgive these folks if your meal takes a while to come out, it's worth the wait.

Kewtiau rebus baso sapi - $11. Boiled flat noodles lightly coated in oily delicious something, with a little mince, mushies and shallots, with beefballs in a side soup. Seriously good cooking.

Sop sapi - $12. Soup with beef, tripe and tendons, veggies and shallots. The pieces of tendon were cooked to a jelly like tenderness, with enough small bits of beef and tripe to fill up each spoonful.

Nasi goreng ayam special - $13. Fried rice with egg, chicken, various marvels of manufactured seafood mystery and a lovely soft fried googie egg on top - super wok-smokey with just the right balance of soy and chilli. Oh boy.

Fajar Indonesian Chinese Restaurant is at 394 Anzac Parade, Kingsford.

  1. Tried to go there today and there was a sign saying that they've closed down for good after 20+ years. So sad I never tried their food.
