Matee Turkish Grill Gozleme & Teahouse ~ King Street Newtown

Matee Turkish Grill Gozleme & Teahouse is a new cheerful, casual little joint down the quiet end of King Street, Newtown.

We are hungry but too lazy to go to Chinatown, and far too lazy to cook, so we waddle up to the brand spanking new Turkish joint on King Street, Newtown.

Matee has a casual\takeway section out the front and a groovy room through the back. Right at the front are a couple of little tables directly under bright lights, perfect for light-starved food bloggers!

Matee has only been open for two days but it quickly fills up while we are eating. As we eat we notice a few passers-by do a double-take when they see the new restaurant, then step inside to give it a try. Matee seems to have all the ingredients that work in Newtown: casual but quirky fitout; a same-same-but-different menu; good cheap food and warm friendly owners.

Stuffed Eggplant, $6. Served at room temperature, a tangy tomato filling, refreshing.

Stuffed Capsicum, $6. Also served at room temperature, stuffed with rice, lovely.

Izgare Kofte - Meatballs Seasoned with Special Herbs and Spices, $10. Fancy pants talk for Turkish rissole, with rice, salad and bread. Yum.

Sucuklu Gozleme - filled with Turkish salami and feta - a perfect hangover cure, $8. Delicious and not made by the Gozleme Mafia for a change, that tent of Turkish ladies that magically appear at every public event in Sydney. Is there a cartel that imports those old Turkish ladies? Are they forced labour? What happens when they are too old to work?

Matee owners hard at work on their second night of business.

Matee is at 528 King Street, down the South end right next to The Moose bar. It almost looks like a part of the Moose. We'll certainly be back for a quick, cheap, tasty feed and we must try their Turkish coffee and tea.

We love checking out the crowd at the Enmore theatre. Tonight Bliss N Eso are playing, the crowd outside is and young daggy, Bacardi Breezers and gnashing teeth. Lots of cops. Blokes in fluro vests to stop punters from stumbling into oncoming traffic. My all time favourite Enmore Theatre crowd was for Toto, lots of non-ironic moustaches and brown leather jackets with too many flaps and zips. Second best was aging rudeboys for The Specials, somebody needs to give Rudy that message... We are especially looking forward to see what comes out of the cupboard for the upcoming Joy Division show...

  7. Was there last Friday, they had some nice live Turkish jazz music - went down really well with my pide. My taste buds were satisfied and so were my eyes - the Turkish singer was just as hot as my food... yum yum!
