Ryo's Noodles ~ Japanese - Crows Nest

Ryo's Noodles in Crows Nest gets many folks' vote for best Japanese ramen in Sydney - we can see why...

[Updated August 2012]

We've made a number of attempts to sample the famous ramen at Ryo's Noodles. But with it being only open for two hours for lunch, and an ever-present queue, we've never made it until today.

We took one sip of our ramen broth and raised our eyebrows at each other knowingly - now THIS is ramen! To make a top notch ramen you need to specialise in it and you need a good turnover, which is precisely what happens at Ryo's. The half hour wait in the queue was so thoroughly worth it.

This is one of the best ramens to be had in Sydney if not the best, definitely worth a trip across town for. Some folks recommend getting there before opening to get to the front of the queue. If you are trekking across town it may help to call and check they are open as they do take a holiday every now and again.

Super happy terrific interior.

Super happy terrific drinks.

Super happy terrific rank board.

Side of bamboo shoot pickles - $4.

#6 - Ramen in Tokyo style soy sauce (chicken base) soup with roast pork, egg, bamboo shoots and nori - $11.50.

#2 - Ramen in soy sauce flavour soup (pork/tonkotsu base) with roast pork, nori, egg and shallots - $12.50.

Cod roe rice ball - $5.

Roast pork and mayo sandwiches - $3 - available eat-in or takeaway. Made with shredded pork and a touch of mustard and the crusts are cut off. Highly recommended.

BACK AGAIN, AUGUST 2012...

We find ourselves in North Sydney near 12pm and there's no queue at Ryo's, we walk straight in, woohoo!

BBQ pork bun - $3.50. A chinese style steamed bun with a mushy porky filling, and plenty of it. Yum.

#4 Salt flavour with roast pork, egg, shallots, sesame seeds - $11. Broth is salty as advertised but without being over the top, it has a nice depth to it. Noodles and pork are perfect. Our personal preference is for a plain soft boiled googie rather than a salty soya type egg, but we can't have everything now can we? Fantastic.

Ramen with miso bolognaise sauce - $14. We were expecting a soup with some bolognaise on top (they love bolognaise in Japan, who doesn't?), but we liked what we got much better. Perfectly cooked ramen noodles served dry with skeddie sauce on top. Almost made Mr Shawn's hangover disappear.

  5. The sambos are from leftover roast pork from the ramen - the're all warm and squidgy.

  6. Gotta love finding 'best of' spots. Want to give it a go for the cod roe rice ball alone - yum. I never mind waiting in food queues .. it means you know there's something worthwhile at the end!
