Asia Eater - A new Asian food magazine review

Street Food looks at a new magazine Asia Eater, inspiring our favourite things - travel and eating.

With thanks to Asia Eater for the free review copy!

Asia Eater is a new food magazine that seeks to celebrate only Asian food – street food, fine restaurants, rum makers and desserts all get a good shot in the first issue. Looking over the inaugural edition has sparked furious tagging and bookmarking for ideas on travels and eating. There was a lot of oohing and aahing over food we've tried and the places we've been as much as reading about the new places and things still left to explore.

The magazine gives a good run across the Asian food spectrum and features a number of writers with blogs we regularly read, especially Makiko Ito from Just Bento. The cover story on the relocation of the Tsukiji fish market struck a cord in our Japanophile hearts, it will be interesting to see how this move develops.

There's a wide range of stories, more leaning toward personal stories, chef based interviews or food producers and hopefully in further issue some more street food heroes. The magazine has a different layout and design than often seen in slicker publications, the font choices seemed a little unusual at times but this is part of the appeal to us. There's wonderful colour photos to give a visual to the stories, it really just needs a page with lick-o-rama so we can taste them too.

For us as bloggers, the story about people taking photos of food was like discovering how the other side lives. What do you mean everyone doesn't take photos of their food?

Reading magazines as a digital version takes some getting used to, there’s something about reading on screen that’s still not native, unlike flicking through the big colour pictures of a mag ignoring the ads and drifting off into revelries of travel planning and food memories. But if this is the only way to get it without breaking the bank, so be it. The other up side is you don’t end up with piles of mags in a corner that gather dust or stacked in with cookbooks and get covered with food stains. I'm just waiting to be handed an ipad instead of a glossy magazine next time at the hairdressers.

Asia Eater is available as a digital edition as well as print. I haven’t seen it in Sydney as a hard copy, and the freight cost is pretty high for a regular subscription so digital makes it an affordable option for Australian readers. Read it and eat, the second edition is out soon and we will be subscribing and imbibing.

  1. Thanks for sharing! the magazine looks really enticing, have started to browse their website and for sure will order the 1st copy. Based in France I am always happy to broaden my perspective on Asian trends and enrich cooking/fragrance inspirations!:)

    2. Typo from Shawn there - we've been unable to get a hard copy here! Perhaps contact the publishers? It's about $30 postage from Singapore (eep!).

  3. The magazine was available in Sydney bookshops from last week and will be in Tokyo in about a month (due to the logistical complications of international distribution). In the meantime, postage is $13 an issue to Australia, which is cost price for 1st class air mail, so there's not a lot we can do about that unfortunately. A 1 year/4 issue subscription is only $30 however. Thanks for the interest in the magazine,
    Terry

Thanks for your comment joy - please keep your musings happy - if you want to complain about a restaurant please do it on a restaurant review site (or your own blog) - we're all about celebrating cultural diversity and the great eats that come along with it :-)

Our ethics: We pay for all our own meals and travel (though sometimes Mum shouts us).
