Indo Lankan Food Bar ~ Sri Lankan & Indian - Seven Hills

Street Food gets out west for Sunday Sri Lankan curry specials in Seven Hills.

We love a good Sri Lankan vegetable curry. There's a mix of the right amount of variety and flavours, sometimes sweet and always spicy, crunchy, soft and smooth. Indo Lankan Food Bar sounds like it could be a small takeaway shop, which in part it is. The other part is an eat in restaurant with Sri Lankan curries, roti, kottu roti, hoppers and Sunday specials of amazing value.

Vegetable curry on banana leaf $13.90 is a Sunday specialty at Indo Lankan Food Bar, only served on the last Sunday of each month. There's a mix of okra, dhal, roast chilli, vadai, potato, chick pea, a small soup and a sweet tapioca dessert. We had one of these each so there was no fighting over the best bits.

We head back on another Sunday and order off the regular specials board. Vegetable Briyani looks like a small serve, but the compressed rice breaks apart to reveal a substantial serve of flavoured rice with vegetables and cashew nuts throughout. The side dish of eggplant sambol is is deep and dark with flavour.

Crab curry, a few good legs of crab with enough meat to satisfy. Half the fun of this is getting the crab sauce all over your hands, down your arms and smeared across your face. Lucky there's a wash basin in the restaurant for cleaning up. The fishy/crabby sauce has more goodness at the bottom, don't ignore it's hidden charms.

Faluda, a sweet rose scented milky drink with floating basil seeds and a lump of ice cream. Almost a kiddie drink, it's fun.

The takeaway part of the restaurant has all the Sri Lankan hits available, including a big range of short eats (small fried samosas, patties and chick pea fritters). There's sambols and desserts to takeaway in the fridges.

Much better than a chicko roll.

Indo Lanka Food Bar is at 59-61 Boomerang Place, Seven Hills. Check out the menu at www.indolankanfoodbar.com.au. Phone (02) 96767602. NB- we arrived around midday on a Sunday got a table for two ok, but the place filled up quick and there were lots of reserved tables. You might want to book.

For more Sri Lankan groceries and takeaway there is also Rice 'n' Spice and Kate Foods just around the corner.

  1. I LOVE Indo Lankan! I used to get their prawn string hoppers and lamb mince masala dosa all the time when I lived out west. You have to try their dosas next! :)

  2. Grew up out in Sevo and i love this place. Just to prove it that's my mum and step-dad in your photo (the 2 folk facing each other just past the old bloke in the centre).

Now I live where places charge $9 for bread... Sydney, sigh.
