Yum Cha at King's Seafood Restaurant ~ Chinese - Eastwood

King's Seafood in Restaurant in Eastwood is rowdy and joyous at yum cha time. The service is quick and easy, and the food is, well, it's yum cha.

There's a load of hooha on the internet about what's the best yum cha in town. We've eaten yum cha everywhere from Marrickville to Guangzhou, and to be perfectly Francis with you, it all tastes pretty much the same to us. You usually get the same dishes at most places, with varying levels of quality and service. As long as the food is fresh and the room is large and noisy and we've got no idea how to read the bill, we're happy. King's Seafood has all that plus beer.

It's all good. The most moans of pleasure came from the orange square thing in the middle bottom photo, it was like a steamed sweet stodgey cakey with big coconut notes. Yay. Our only gripe was the whitebait was cold by the time we got it.

The other hit of the table was the prawn and garlic chive wontons, top left, prawns mixed with fresh green flavours equals happy.

The dessert trolley had a couple of new treasures for us. The sago pudding (left) was thick, warm and custard-like. The steamed cake with layers of egg yolk to bottom left was also a winner, light and stodgy at the same time, slightly fruity.

King's Seafood Restaurant is at 140 Rowe St Eastwood, NSW. That's in the pedestrian mall bit. It was busy on a public holiday but not too crazy.

  1. If you didn't know already, the fried whitebait (and fried squid) can be made to order, instead of getting the cold plate off the trolley.

    1. That's a really good tip, sometimes just seeing it on the trolley you want it straight away, but maybe it's worth the wait.

    2. Another good tip: make the trip to Granville RSL, the yum cha in there is much better than this one.

  2. I believe the orange square is pumpkin cake.

    1. Thanks, we've actually found out this is a water chestnut version, we tasted the crunch in it.

  3. Sago pudding is one of my favourite yum cha desserts! This place looks to be a good one.

  4. "orange square thing in the middle bottom photo" -- looks like sam sik ko, or three-coloured cakes; the yellow/orange one is water chestnut cake (made from water chestnut flour, with some slivers of water chestnut), the white one carrot cake, and the grey one yam/taro cake. :) I love to order this one with two water chestnut and one carrot cake, heh. No love for taro. XD

    1. The orange one we suspected did have little crunchy bits of water chestnut, so it must have been this and not pumpkin. We loved them all.

  5. Orange square thing must have been water chestnut glutinous cake. Usually it's steamed as a cake then cut into squares for light pan frying.

Yum cha literally means to "Drink Tea" so generally we say say "going yum cha" or "eat dim sum" and not eat yum cha =)
