Our knowledge and experience of Mexican food has been limited by a lack of good options in Sydney. Shawn has been listening to a California based podcast for years that always mentions the great Mexican food they have, its been a culinary ear worm. Any fan of Jonathan Gold would also know all about his love of the taco in L.A. When we heard about this tamaleria in Dulwich Hill, and it fitted right into a walk around our local inner west bubble, it was time to try it.
Gorditas are a corn meal or masa based bread stuffed with more of that slow cooked pork. They're cousin to arepas and pupusas, a way to use up left overs and make them into something delicious. There's a pork and cheese version on offer, we loved the pork one we tried.
Gorditas guts, all glory. Apparently gordita translates as 'chubby' and now we know why. Check out the glorious salsa additions and the jalapenos. Not too hot, they really add a flavour kick. We also took a jar of the green salsa home.
Tamales are another new dish for us. Corn husks are stuffed with corn meal and a strong flavour, in this case chicken and green sauce. We highly recommend the rajas con queso, a filling of tomato and cheese. This is a stodgy serve of food, elastic waist pants are recommended.
The beef burrito - $15. A serious hunger buster of beef (or veg), potato and beans.
Tamaleria & Mexican Deli is at 463 Marrickville Road, Dulwich Hill.
This post is brought to you by a fine pat floozy of Edgeware Road, Enmore.
It does deserve mention that this pussycat came all the way down from his napping spot at the top of the stairs to say hello.
Definitely the only place in Sydney that I've found food anything like the street food you get in Mexico City.
