While the zombie invasion still sucks brains we continue the rounds of hole-in-the-wall restos with outdoor dining. Hopefully the bloody-government will get it's act together soon and make it easier for restos to bung a few tables outside, particularly in Dixon Street Mall which is screaming with potential.
But there are outdoor dining options for b-kyu aficionados, finding them has become a sport for us. Our latest favourite is Yummy Noodle & BBQ, in the northern bit of Dixon Street Mall. The noodle soups in particular grab us by the booboo.
Kudos to the cheery folks that run this place!
Spicy pork intestines rice noodles - $14.90. A hot'n'spicy broth, very similar to Chonqing noodles, which we adore. The pork intestines have a super umami punch, fantastic. We enjoyed this so much we tried it again and it was just as wow the second time around. A new favourite.
Lamb skewars - 5 for $6. Cumin lamb on a stick, little satay sized fellas.
A side of beef and mixed vegatables - $6.90. Delicious beef, kinda like roast beef on a bed of lettuce. Yay.
Spicy beef rice noodles - $12.90 (small). Slices of beef and pork in a lightly spicy broth, fantastic. We love the smaller sized soups here, great for a small lunch or for leaving enough room for a side dish.
Laoyou rice noodles - $12.90 (small). We can't recall eating laoyou rice noodles before, in we dive. It's like a jazzed up version of the classic pork and preserved veggie soup - only with minced pork, a little chilli and lots of extra little bitties. Dinner winner.
Cucumber with beef tendon - $6.90. The beef tendons are super soft and coated in a sweet/sour sauce, the cucumber cuts through a zing. The oozy gelatinous texture of the tendons are the magic in this side dish. It took us a long time to realise that texture is a 'thing' in Chinese cooking, that mouth feel can be right up there with flavour. But once this concept took hold in our little brains we have never looked back.
Yummy Noodle & BBQ exists at Shop 36, 1 Dixon Street, Haymarket. In the newer\northern bit of Dixon Street Mall. www.yummychinesebbq.com.au
