99 Noodle Plus ~ Chinese - Hurstville

We take a punt on 99 Noodle Plus in Hurstville. Cheap, simple, different, good. It's a winner.

99 Noodle Plus is your basic bare bones hole in the wall joint in Hurstville on Ormonde Parade, just near the train station. It's a hot day so we go for a simple noodle soup for rehydration and refreshment, with some light side dishes for flavour.

Sweet and Sour Pickled Vegetables - $3. Lettuce, cabbage and carrot briefly marinated in vinegar and sugar. So simple yet so tasty, so cool and refreshing on a stinking hot day. The veggies retain their crunch and have a lovely sweet vinegary tang. Love it. Alison makes a point of how we would probably pay $12-$15 for a dish like this at a Neil Perry restaurant. Yet here it is $3, a very fair price, even considering there's about 30 cents worth of ingredients.

Tea Eggs - $1. Always a favourite. Cheap too!

They have a range of soupy hot pot noodle soup dishes. We go for  'Balls Rice Noodle' - $10.80. A plain, simple refreshing broth with a party of different balls: beef, mushroom, pork and cuttlefish. We have a strange obsession with manufactured meat...

The noodles for our hotpot are served on the side, we guess so there is less time for the noodles to starch up the broth. Add your noodles when you are ready, and avoid the temptation to make jokes about balls.

I order Grained Sauced Pork Ribs for it's curious name. $5.95. It was like braised pork ribs in sweet and sour sauce. A guilty pleasure.

Marinated Pork Intestines - $3. Sounds bad. Tastes good.

99 Noodle Plus is at 18 Ormonde Parade Hurstville, just near the train station.

Our lunch was so simple but there was an unidentifiable something special about it, maybe we were just super hungry. While we were eating Alison says to me, looking at our food, "THIS is why I could never live in the country..." And it was only $25 between us, including a can of Coke. Happy.

  1. The grain sauce is made from black vinegar instead of usual malt vinegar you find in sweet and sour sauces. The black vinegar version is more of a traditional one =)
