Asian King Review #2 ~ Shanghai Chinese - King Street Newtown

Savann Laos Thai Restaurant Cabramatta Sydney Australia

Fine food approved by Mr Shakespeare J. Pussycat.

Asian King in Newtown is growing on us, bigtime. They do some great Shanghai style dishes though you have to wade your way through the 'sweet and sour pork' type dishes on the menu to find the good stuff. If in doubt, ask the lady in charge, she is friendly and keen for her customers to try some of the more traditional dishes. Let her know you would like something different and she will go out of her way to help. This is our second visit, see our other review.

Shanghai pan fried pork dumplings, we're getting a taste for these, we are normally steamed dumpling folks. $8.80.

The lady running the show wisely suggests one of the house specialties, garlic bamboo chicken.

This dish is small pieces of deep fried chicken in a light, crispy batter with garlic, shallots and peanuts. Skillfully cooked and very tasty. $15.80.

Diced chicken and salty fish fried rice. Fluffy rice and not shy on the salted fish, nice strong flavours. $10.80.

Shredded pork Szechuan style with hand made pancakes. Roll 'em up rawhide! The pork is mixed with bamboo shoots, delicious and very filling. $15.80.

Asian King Chinese Restaurant is at 121 King Street Newtown, next door to the wonderful Asakusa. See our previous review.

Once again our eyes are bigger than our tums and we have to get a doggy bag.

Mr Shakespeare J. Pussycat at Books on King, King Street, Newtown

On our way home we find the famous pussycat from Books on King (King Street Newtown) on night duty. Another fan sees us taking photos and tells us the cat's name is Shakespeare. This cat has been there as long as I can remember, he must be fifteen or so years old. Can anybody out there confirm his name and age?

  1. Yep Shakespeare's the name and at least 15, he's been there as long as I've been a local (also 15 years), not looking too bad for his age :)

  2. He looks great for his age, a fine looking pussycat. The owners of the bookshop responded as well but I lost all user comments when transferring the blog to a new host (doh!). Apparently he was adopted so they're not sure how old he is, but at least 15 years they reckon. They said he likes to chew on books, a bad habit for a bookshop cat, which is why we don't see him out the front much anymore.
