We have eaten Chinese roast duck all over Asia and wherever we can find it in Sydney. Mr Chao BBQ Bar in Marrickville is a great option for a Chinese BBQ fix if you are in the inner west and couldn't be arsed going into Chinatown.
Chinese roast duck is never quite as good in Australia as it is overseas, but it is still sensational. The cooking methods seem the same so it must be down to the quality of the produce, which makes sense considering they eat a hell of a lot more duck in Asia than we do in Sydney.
We are going to Hong Kong in a few weeks so we head to Mr Chao for a duck-with-rice to get us in the mood.
The skin is crispy and the skin is rich and sweet. It is served with fresh Chinese greens to counter the richness and fattiness of the duck. The sweet juices of the duck and sauce soak into the rice, it is heaven.
Mr Chao is no slouch on the roast pork front either: sweet, tender meat with decadent layers of fat and crispy crackling skin. Nigella would approve.
Mr Chao BBQ Bar has the compulsary array of mysterious roasted innards in the front window that I never see anybody order, except for the chicken feet. They also have some great side dishes including our old favourite, sliced pigs ear.
We have eaten at Mr Chao more times than we can remember and have found it consistently good.
Mr Chao BBQ Bar is at 289 Marrickville Rd. [CLOSED - 2011]
It's no longer there unfortunately. No more BBQ duck in Marrickville. :(
