Nhat Tan Review ~ Vietnamese - Marrickville

A Friday night quickie at Nhat Tan, one of the classic old Vietnamese joints on Illawara Road, Marrickville, my goat it's good.

Marrickville isn't exactly a hub of pumping action at night but it's a nice quiet alternative to the hullabaloo of Newtown, a quick easy in-and-out feed.

Nhat Tan is one of the older Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall joints in Marrickville, cheap and cheerful.

Stuffed Chicken Wings $6. Lightly fried chook stuffed with pork and veggies, the stuffing in this version reminds me of mum's rissoles, yum!

Hue Style Spicy Soup. $9.50. A thin beefy broth with a light spicy kick and slabs of meat, a couple of pork luncheon slices, and more meat, the most meat I've ever seen in a Vietnamese soup. Thick noodles like spaghetti, so filling a big fella like me couldn't finish it.

Goat Noodle Soup. $9.50. Lovely slow-cooked fall-off-the-bone hunks of goat meat, with winter vegetables (brocolli, carrot and choy sum) in an earthy, viscous broth. Perfect winter fare.

Vietnamese coffee in a very Brady 1970's coffee mug, which matches the vintage of the decor, love it. The coffee is strong and very sweet, almost as sweet as the boss lady running the place, a gorgeous soul.

Groovy old signage.

From a later visit... Beef stew was stir fried with a hoisin flavour too it, about $8. Tastey but not exciting.

Alison's fancy pants bun thit nuong with spring rolls. Yum. About $9.

Bun Bo Hue - a winner - around $9.

Nhat Tan is at 310 Illawara Road, Marrickville. Ph 9558 4309.
