Chonsiam Review # 2 ~ Thai – Campbell\Pitt Street Thainatown

Chon Siam has boat noodle soup straight out of Bangkok, at $4 per bowl it’s one of the best value street feeds in Sydney.

Chon Siam is a tiny drop-in kinda place, a little funky, and always full of Thai people, always a good sign.

We first called this blog 'Travelling At Home' when it lived on our travel book site, excuse the plug. On a beautiful sunny day like today there's is nothing better than putting on some walking shoes and wandering around Sydney like a tourist. We caught a bus from home in Enmore to Paddington, and walked back home via the backstreets of Elizabeth Bay/Kings Cross, Darlinghurst, and of course, Chinatown. We planned to feast bigtime at somewhere new and exotic in Chinatown but instead were drawn to an old favourite, Chon Siam in Thainatown. We have blogged Chon Siam before but our photos turned out crap, a fine excuse to come back.

The condiment set includes a bowl of sugar just like Thailand, we have seen many Thais shovel sugar on top of their main meal, each to their own.

We come back here again and again for the roadside classic, boat noodle soup: a rich beefy broth with noodles, meat and a little veg. This time Miss Chicken tries the pork, delicious with surpisingly tender chunks of swine.

I can never go past the beef boat noodle soup. I used to eat this for breakfast in Bangkok, memories...

One thing we love about eating in Asia is that the serving sizes are usually much smaller than in Australia. You are left satiated but not stuffed, with a little room left to try something else. Chon Siam serves the boat noodle soup in a perfectly sized small bowl. And it's only $4 per serve, incredible value, if we had a top five this would be in it. After walking a few kms we had some room left in for something snacky at Ho's Dim Sim Kitchen.

Chon Siam is on Campell Street in Haymarket, just a little East of the corner of Pitt Street, open lunch time till late.

  1. Wow I am amazed at the variety of food in Syndey Australia! I'm from Singapore and it is soooo damn hard to find Thai Boat Noodles here. We have something call Thaksin Beef noodle but it ain't nothing compared to the real stuff which I had in Bangkok, Thailand.
