New Peony Cake Shop & Bakery ~ Chinese - Marrickville Road, Marrickville
Mango pancakes, pandan cake and a tops Chinese auntie.
New Peony Cakeshop & Bakery is a Chinese bakery in Marrickville. It's a great place for a quick, cheap post-meal sweetie. We love the folks that run the place: behind the counter there is often a lovely and very grumpy old dumpling of a Chinese auntie, she's tops. We have the greatest respect for old Chinese folks, they have most likely seen very hard times in their lives, they have the right to be grumpy. Her daughter is the exact opposite: very friendly and chirpy. One day I bought a durian roll and she was beside herself with worry that I wouldn't like the durian.
New Peony Cakeshop & Bakery has the usual Chinese sweeties and snacks. Grab a tray and some tongs and help yourself.
There's a stack of more western style cakes, these have a lighter texture and generally less rich than the western equivalent. I have grown to like the lightness of Chinese cakes.
But I come for the mango pancakes, also available in peach and durian.
The mango pancake is a delicious beast. A thin crepe wrapped up into in a lovely little parcel.
It is filled with plenty-o-cream and a slither of mango, enough to do the job. $2.50.
My other favourite is the plain pandan sponge cake, something I first stumbled upon on Indonesia and have loved ever since. Lovely and simple, settles the stomach. The best food is green. It was about $1.80 from memory.
New Peony Cakeshop & Bakery is at 255 Marrickville Rd, Marrickville.
